How to avoid the 7 BIGGEST Aquarium Mistakes
How A Sponge Filter Works
A Sponge Filter is composed of a porous foam, weighted bottom, lift tube, and strainer. These components allow you to connect an airline and start purifying the water. They use air from an air pump to pull in surrounding water through the sponge and push it out through the lift tube, at the same time, aerating your aquarium by exuding bubbles.
This mechanism uses both mechanical filtration and biological filtration. The foam is an excellent biological media and serves as a breeding ground for beneficial bacteria and when the water is pushed through the bacteria have an amazing time ridding your aquarium of ammonia and other harmful substances in your tank.
We recommend adding BioActive8 to your aquarium when you add in your new sponge filter to get the ball rolling.
Sponge Filters For Delicate Fish
As well as providing good filtration and aeration, the low-flow nature of a sponge filter creates the perfect environment for more delicate fish and is the choice of many breeders to protect their fry from harsh currents and getting sucked into the filter.
Axolotls love still water, which is why we have air pump, airline, sponge filter and check valve (Prevents the water from rushing back and destroying your pump) in all our Axolotl packages. In many hospital tanks anything other than a sponge filter puts too much stress on the recovering fish, reducing the likelihood they make a speedy recovery.
Smooth Sailing For Axolotls
Sizes of Sponge Filters range from small units capable of 30l to larger, capable of 136l. If more filtration is required, simply use two.
To increase the filtration in any size of sponge filter, add a larger air pump. The more air pulling water through the sponge, the better it works.
