Axolotl Tank Recommendation

Axolotl Care Essentials
Substrate and tank setup
We recommend not having stones or pebbles on the bottom of an axolotl aquarium, as these can be swallowed while they eat.
Feeding
We have a range of axolotl food, including:
- Pellet diets
- Frozen diets
Water conditioning
We recommend using chlorine neutraliser to remove chlorine from tap water. This page notes chlorine can be harmful to axolotls because it breaks down their protective slime coating.
We also recommend adding blue conditioning salts to add minerals to the water to support axolotl health.
Compatibility and Behaviour
Axolotls tend to be very docile if left alone. However, they can be aggressive towards each other if they are not fed enough or if they are kept in an overcrowded aquarium.
Other species in the tank—such as small fish, small crustaceans, and baby axolotls—could be “dinner” for a larger axolotl. If you add any other species, this page advises ensuring the aquarium has plenty of décor and hiding areas.
In regards to compatibility:
Axolotls may bite or attack other animals within reach.
Some more aggressive fish may nip at an axolotl’s gills.
If you want to keep other species together with your axolotl, it is recommended that you invest in a larger 3 foot or 4 foot aquarium.
