Aquarium Canister Filters
A canister filter is the best way to save space in your aquarium
How does an Aquarium Canister Filter work?
Canister filters are an excellent way to filter your water without the need to take up all the aquarium space like an internal filter does. Canister filters remain outside the tank while pumping water through layers of wool, sponge, and most importantly, biological media.
The large capacity space of a canister filter allows them to use biological filtration over that of activated carbon, saving on upkeep costs and maintenance time. Some models of Canister Filter include Ultraviolet Light, which eliminates algae and removes imperfections from the water.
Our Range of Canister Filter
There are many different models and sizes of canister filters so it is important to match the right size with your aquarium, the general rule being the number of litres filtered per hour must be between 3-8 times more than the litres in your tank. We stock the best quality canister filters and each model offer easy guides on their packaging which enable you to choose the correct size for your tank. They range from 60L to 700L for aquariums and up to 10000L for pond canisters.
Maintaning Your Canister Filter
Maintaining your canister filter is quite simple. Every 3-4 months, the wool and sponge will get dirty and no longer filter efficiently. Simply replacing these with new wool and sponge will rejuvenate your Canister Filter into working as good as new.
Tip – Be careful when cleaning the Canister Filter to use dechlorinated water while rinsing and washing the ‘guts’ of your Canister Filter, as chlorine can kill the beneficial bacteria that live inside it, a proper clean can be managed whilst leaving the biological media submerged, maintaining a healthy bacteria culture.
